Top Places Not To Miss In Prague

Travel Dad

Introduction:

Prague, the enchanting capital of the Czech Republic, is a city straight out of a fairytale.

With its stunning Gothic architecture, charming cobbled streets, and rich history, it’s no wonder this destination is a favourite among travellers. From the grandeur of Prague Castle to the magic of the Astronomical Clock, here’s your ultimate guide to the must-visit spots in Prague.

Prague Castle: A Royal Marvel

No trip to Prague is complete without visiting Prague Castle. Perched on a hill overlooking the city, this sprawling complex is home to St. Vitus Cathedral, the Old Royal Palace, and the picturesque Golden Lane featuring an incredible display of armour through the ages. Take your time exploring the castle grounds, soaking in the history, and enjoying the fantastic views of the city below.

Fun Fact: Prague Castle is the largest castle complex in the world !

Charles Bridge: A Walk Through History

One of Prague’s most iconic landmarks, Charles Bridge is a masterpiece of medieval architecture. Lined with 30 baroque statues, this historic bridge connects the Old Town and Lesser Town. Visit at sunrise for a peaceful experience or in the evening when the bridge is beautifully illuminated.

Top Tip: Arrive early as the bridge gets very busy! Also if you arrive early you can take advantage of the early bird tickets for the bridge tower with 50% off within the first hour of opening. ( This also applies to all the other towers in Prague)

Wenceslas Square

Wenceslas Square & The National Museum

One of Prague’s most famous squares, Wenceslas Square is a lively boulevard filled with shops, restaurants, and cultural landmarks. At the top of the square stands the grand National Museum, a must-visit for history lovers. The museum’s impressive collection showcases Czech history, art, and science, offering a deep dive into the country’s rich heritage.

Old Town Square & The Astronomical Clock: A Timeless Beauty

Step into the heart of Prague at Old Town Square, where history and charm collide. The highlight apparently is The Astronomical Clock, a 600-year-old marvel that puts on an hourly show with its moving figures. However although the clock is a remarkable piece of engineering I would argue that the main highlight is in fact the square itself featuring the iconic towers of the old town hall and surrounded by a number of other impressive and colourful buildings.

Žižkov Tower: A Futuristic Landmark

For a completely different perspective of Prague, visit Žižkov Tower. This striking, space-age structure dominates the city skyline and offers one of the highest observation points in Prague. Originally built as a television tower, it now houses a viewing deck with panoramic views and even a restaurant where you can dine above the city. The tower is also famous for the surreal sculptures of crawling babies by artist David Černý, adding a unique artistic touch.

Word of caution: While the tower is interesting and very contrasting to the rest of the city, this building was also voted as one of the ugliest buildings in the world and unfortunately the inside matches up to this! I would say this is something to add only if you have the time and want to experience something different.

Ride the Iconic Prague Trams

Riding the iconic tram system is essential when visiting this city, as it efficiently connects neighborhoods and attractions. The network, featuring both vintage and modern trams, embodies the city's spirit. Designed for public transport, walking, and cycling, the city eliminates the need for personal vehicles. Trams run around the clock, allowing easy exploration of landmarks and local areas. This offers a practical navigation method and a chance to experience the city's rhythm.

Dad Tips for the Trip:

  • Comfortable Shoes are a Must: Prague’s cobbled streets are charming but can be tough on the feet, so wear sturdy, comfortable shoes.

  • Use Public Transport: The city’s trams and metro system are efficient and easy to navigate—plus, it saves your legs from all the walking!

  • Try Trdelník (But Know It’s a Tourist Treat): This sweet pastry is delicious, but it’s not a traditional Czech dessert. Still, it’s worth a taste!

  • Christmas Markets: If you can visiting at Christmas time like we did it a magical experience allowing you to explore this already incredible city but with the addition of some of the best Christmas markets to be found anywhere.

Conclusion:

Prague is a city that captures the heart with its blend of history, culture, and stunning architecture. Whether you’re wandering across Charles Bridge, marveling at the Astronomical Clock, or soaking in the views from Petrin Hill, every moment here is special.
